how to prolong the life of a deck? 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Right then clever people, help me out on this one

I recently acquired a secondhand MTB deck with bindings for my sandboarding/scudding ambitions. (no-one gave me an old skateboard!)
It's seen a fair bit of action, and is showing signs of age - the top layer of ply is starting to try to peel away in places, it has a few minor splits/cracks/scratches - just general wear & tear really.

Now because I'm planning to use it on wet grass and sand, I'm worried that the moisture/sand/salt will get into it and cause it to fall apart quite quickly, so I'd like to do something that will prevent or at least slow down the effects.
Ideally it would be something cheap and easy.

The first things that come to mind are marine grade varnish and sticky back plastic, but I know nothing about either, so I might have to go for the strip of duct tape round the edge

Any ideas/advice?

Best to get an old set of trucks and wheels, this will keep the board off the grass, sand.

:d rixtar has a point...

i think giving everything a good coat or 2 of varnish should be a good start. tape round the rail sounds like a good idea too though. unfortunatly i guess that if its already got moisture in it then the damage may have already been done. still, it should probably last long enough to have a good laugh with

Well the plan was to get an old skateboard deck, but...

So I'll dig up some varnish and duct tape it, oh it's going to be so pretty apparently it's been lying in a garage gathering dust for quite some time, so it's probably well dried out - I just want to slow down the effects of the damage I'm going to inflict on it.

Just for the record, I have access to a "real" MTB but it's a bit heavy for me to carry on the train and so on, with the rest of my stuff. I'll save it for days when my lanky other half is with me
Unfortunately, he neglected to give it to his sister to put in the car for this weekend, so I have to humph it all the way to Falkirk. Oh well

'humph it' maybe its just me but forgive me for thinking its got two wheels at either end, why not just hold one end and r_o_l_l it along?

Yay! My lovely lanky other half dropped the board off at his sister's so I don't have to roll it along behind me (Tom  ) all the way to Falkirk

Notice I'm not making any AGE comments
