Re: Kite for the Missus 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Looking to get a kite primarily for my girlfriend to use and get into kiting with and secondly for really windy days for myself (nothing too expensive). I currently have a bullet 3.5m and am looking to get a blade 4.9m (for boarding), i was considering a buster 2.0m what do ya's think (should those three cover most conditions) ??

:afro:

Cheers in advance!!

Sounds like not a bad combo. The new buster2s have adjustments where you can change the angle of attack and thus the power (I think there are 3 settings) so you get the equivalent of a 2m and 1.7m and a 1.4m or something like that. I would think about ditching the bullet, they are a good kite for buggying, but in my experience they can really give you a right spanking in big gusts when on a board due to your higher centre of gravity.

I want a buggy! but I'm skint now must - stop - buying - stuff!

Anyway, if you're looking for a cheap tracion kite for buggying in high winds, and letting the laydee play with, you could consider a radsail.
They're fairly decent budget kites, the 2.4 has plenty of pull (in high wind) but next to no lift. Pretty much bombproof, but gets very heavy when damp and the bridles are a bit beefy...

In fact - its crap. Get a Buster

Hmmmm......

Ok, here is my 2p worth.

If you are looking at getting an original 2m Buster then this is a good starter kite and good for those stupid windy days. The original 2m busters would have roughly the same amount of pull as a 1.5 bullet but because its .5m bigger it isnt as fast through the air which is good when learning and because of the shape of the buster I find it more predictable and easier to fly (some people will say different).
As Rixtar said, the busters are designed so you can change the Angle of Attack (AoA) of the kite which means you can make it have less pull in really high winds, Ive found that the factory setting is fine for all conditions in most cases.

The Buster Mk2 which are out just now are a big improvement over the original Buster and are cheaper!! I've had the 2m on Demo and really liked it, it also comes with lots of extras, have a look HERE for full details about the Buster Mk2.

Other good kites for learning with or for high winds would be the Ozone Fury, very easy to fly and great fun, its the kite we use the most when teaching! Flexi have just brought out the Rage (replacement for the Bullet) not had a chance to fly one but I would imagine they would be a good kite to learn with as well, also the HQ Beamer (Jerry on the forum can give you more details about these) from what I have heard and read, HQ have really improved these kites over the past year.

The Blade II 4.9 is a brilliant kite, I have flown the Blade III but prefered the Blade II, this is mostly down to my flying style though, I have a Blade II 4.9 and it was my most used kite until I got my Frenzy 10m. Give the blades the respect they are due and you will get on great with them, in the right / wrong conditions, these kites will lift you off the ground without any notice, start in low winds and build up to what you are comfortable with. If you can afford a new Blade 4 then it might be worth it, they also have adjustable bridles which allows you to loose some lift but get more pull or change it to have more lift and less pull.
Saying this, the Blade is not everyones cup of tea. If its landboarding you want to get in to then maybe worth giving a depowerable kite a go e.g. HQ Montana, Flexifoil Sabre, Ozone Frenzy (these are all bridled depowerbales) or try a Peter Lynn Arc, the Arcs are good for landboarding due to their auto zenith (if you let go of the bar it will automatically sit above your head). This is not a feature that the bridled depowerable kites have....
The arcs also handle gusts very well, much better than fixed bridle kites i.e. Blades, Bullets, Busters....so that is also something to think about.

Im sure there are many more things to think about but this will get you started

Hope that helps in some way.

While I was writing this I notice you are saying you are getting a buggy as well.....now the problems begin. The Blade can be used in the buggy but there is more of a risk of getting pulled out of the buggy due to the lift in the kite. Lift is good when you want to do freestyle moves i.e. Buggy jumping, but not good for learning as it can slow down your learning experience. The bullet has very low lift and perfect for the buggy as is the buster...again low to no lift = staying in the buggy
If you do get a blade and do use it in the buggy then just remember not to take the kite above your head too fast, this will prevent the lift kicking in as much.
If you are at St Andrews any time soon or can make it to TK in the Park this weekend, you are more than welcome to try my Blade II 4.9 and 6.6 if you think you can handle it

If you're at TKP2, I'll let you try my radsail 2.4 and 4m Blade III too

The difference between them is ... humbling

Another option of course is, if the kite is just for recreational flying e.g. not for buggy or landboarding then maybe worth thinking about the Ozone Imp, this kite comes on either a bar or wrist loops, brilliant fun on high wind days, it comes in 3 sizes 1m, 1.5m and 2m, or a Ozone LD Stunt (4 line) on handles, again we have used this kite for teaching and you can buggy with it but you need really high winds to buggy well with it
And so I cant be told I am pimping Ozone, I know other brands do 2 line and 4 line "fun" kites perfect for playing with and learning the skills.

You realise you will end up with 2 kite bags, his and hers, if your missus takes up the sport We have (me and Judith)

Thanks for the advice, i think i will get a Buster MkII (sounds like a good price) but probably not until next month now after buying the buggy (got it off Helen, sounds great). With regards the Blade again hopefully get that in a month or so but since im still learning i wont be going near either the board or buggy til im well and truly used to its power as i suppose im still a novice at this.

Thanks again for the offers of a shot of your kites, i hope to get along to St. Andrews in the next couple of weeks and might well take you(s) up on that.

Cheers. :afro:
