St Andrews Race Weekend

This weekend is the next chance to see some of Scotland's best kite buggy racers take to West Sands, St Andrews to compete in the Scottish Power Kite Associations (SPKA) race series for the TractionKiting.co.uk cup.

The first racing of 2012 looks to have a couple of international pilots also attending and taking part in the weekend of racing.

If you fancy giving racing a go, there will also be a chance for new comers to give it a go.

For more information visit http://www.spka.org

Full weekend report will be posted on Monday! Fingers crossed for windy, dry conditions!

Merry Christmas from TK

To all the members and visitors of TractionKiting.co.uk,

We would like to thank you for your support over the last year and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a fantastic and windy New Year!

The TK Team.

Kite Zone - St Andrews

This is just a reminder about the dedicated kite zone at St Andrews for those of you who may not have visited West Sands or have not been there recently.

The kite zone is at the far end of West sands beach, towards the RAF Leuchars end of the beach. It is marked out by 2 yellow flags. The first flag that you drive past, on your right hand side, at the last mini-roundabout, is the start of the zone and kiters are asked not to kite on the left hand side of this flag - the St Andrews side. The second flag is approx a mile further down the beach towards Leuchars / Tentsmuir.

Kiters are asked not to fly past the second flag either as it is a nature reserve and you are also heading towards the flight path for RAF Leuchars!

There is now a barrier in place at the far end of the beach to stop cars parking on the dunes. Please park on the left hand side before the "No parking beyond this point" signs and the turning circle and use the slipway to take your kites, buggies and boards down to the beach rather than through the dunes.

If possible, do not setup in front of the slipway, walk to the left or right as this will allow access to the beach for others.

Weekend at Sandhead

Another race weekend with the SPKA and another weekend of poor weather for racing.

Sandhead is approx 15mins drive from Stranraer and if the wind it blowing in the right direction you have approx 10 miles of beach to play on.

Most of the pilots headed down on Friday evening ready for a 9am start on Saturday. The forecast wasn't looking great but everyone was hopeful that things would change.

Saturday morning and everyone registered and met on the beach by 9:30am once they had built up their buggies and setup their wind shelters and tents.

There was wind and it was dry but there was also massive gusts coming off the land. We were told to head out for a practice around the course which Tom Arlott had setup for everyone and we would take a vote as to whether we felt it was a go-er.

After 30mins the pilots briefing was called and due to a number of factors, low sun making it difficult to see, high gusts and low lulls it would have been too dangerous to race. It was fine with one or two on the course but put 20+ pilots on the same course all aiming for the same markers, it was going to be too much.

The racing was cancelled on Saturday but a number of pilots jumped in to their buggies and went on safari to the other end of the beach. 2.5m and 3.0m kites were used while others took a couple of spare kites just in case the wind either picked up or dropped off or they had a need to replace the kite due to malfunctions / mishaps i.e. snapped lines, wet kite.

Owain headed off in the pack but gave up about 1/2 way along due to his 2.5 PKD Century luffing and landing in a wet patch, rather than get stuck 10 miles away from where he started he turned back since he didnt have a spare kite with him. Over an hour later Ped, who was one of the last to leave the pit area, was the first back after covering 20miles! Approx 10miles to the end of the beach and then 10 miles back. The rest of the group all made it back safely as well with huge grins on their faces, although all agreeing that the wind had picked up on the way home and was still very gusty.

Sunday was a non-starter. A change of location was agreed so a group headed to Port Logan but the beach was too small for racing on and quite a few rocks made it a dangerous location for a large group to use, it was then agreed to travel an hour up the road to Croy. The beach has potential but with snow forecast many of the pilots agreed that it wasn't going to happen so all made their way home.

A couple of pilots, Stuart Mackay and Bob Mitchell, stayed to try the beach out. A review will be posted on the website soon.

Although no racing was done it was still a good weekend and most people got out for a short buggy on Saturday.

The next event will be at St Andrews in January, lets hope for less gusty conditions and some good racing!

SPKA Race Weekend 1

Last weekend (1st / 2nd October) was the first weekend on the SPKAracing diary so Owain headed up to Fraserburgh to take part in the weekend's racing along with a number of TK forum members.

Saturday morning was wet but there was hope that the wind would increase and a race would take place. Tom Arlott was race marshall for the day and he set out a course on the beach. A pilot's briefing was called and the wind was picking up but then the heavens opened. Everyone took shelter either in their beach tents or up at the cafe which was just off the beach.

Once the rain passed the wind dropped and it was decided that due to the tide coming in and the lack of wind that no racing would take place. Owain decided to drag his buggy up to the top of the highest dune on the beach and free-wheel down it. Stu Mackay also followed him - the things we do when there is no wind!

Some people got out for a short while between showers and when the wind picked up but it was an afternoon for the big kites, 12m and 14m were required!

Fingers were crossed for Sunday.

Saturday evening the entire fleet headed out for dinner which was organised by Mark and Maggie from Synergy Kitesports, who are based in Fraserburgh. A lovely 3 course meal was laid on for us and many beers and drams were enjoyed.

Sunday morning, registration was at 8:30am but this time there was no stopping the rain. Everyone waited in the hope that a race would be scheduled but once again, the weather gods didnt play ball and the day was abandoned about 12pm.

No racing took place but everyone had a great weekend in Fraserburgh, the next race weekend is at St Andrews, Fife, on the 29th/30th October. Fingers crossed for dry windy conditions so that everyone can get some points on the board!
